December 4, 2006—Adhamiyah, a district in Baghdad stiff with insurgent ambushes and IED threats. McGinnis’s unit was conducting a routine patrol when the enemy struck. Gunfire erupted from hidden corners. The convoy fought to hold its ground.

In one armored humvee, four soldiers sat clustered tight. Suddenly, a grenade bounced inside. McGinnis reacted instantly—a warrior’s reflex hiding behind no hesitation or fear.

He threw himself over the grenade, muffling the blast, saving the lives of his comrades.

The explosion irreparably shattered his body.
