Medal of Honor: Youngest Marine Ever

President Franklin D. Roosevelt awarded Lucas the Medal of Honor in 1945. At 17 years old, he remains the youngest Marine—and the youngest U.S. serviceman—to receive the nation’s highest military honor in WWII^[1]^.

"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the Second Marine Division. When two grenades fell among his group, Pfc. Lucas, being nearest to the grenades, unhesitatingly covered them with his body to save his comrades from serious injury or death."

Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Alexander Vandegrift reflected on Lucas’s valor:

“His sacrifice was the embodiment of the Marine spirit—we fight, we endure, we protect our own, no matter the cost.”

Lucas carried scars that never fully healed. His legacy wasn’t the medal alone but the message that true courage belongs to those who live the cost of war.
