The Battle That Defined Him

January 26, 1945. Near Holtzwihr, France, the 3rd Infantry Division pinned down by a German armored company. Murphy’s unit was shaken, flanks threatened, supplies scarce. The enemy pressed with tanks, machine guns, and a wave of infantry.

Murphy ordered his men to fall back. Then, with a burning rifle and a .45 caliber pistol, he stood alone atop a burning tank destroyer—a sitting target against machinegun nests and advancing troops. For an hour, he held them off.

He lit countless enemy soldiers with precise, ruthless fire. When the tank’s crew was dead, he climbed aboard, manned the .50 caliber machine gun despite shrapnel wounds and exhaustion.

Facing artillery fire and smoke that choked lungs, he refused to relent. His call sign blared in the radio: “I’m holding the line here. No one’s crossing.”

Fellow soldier Sergeant Charles Thomas said, “His courage held us all together. On that hill, he became our shield and sword.”[²]

Murphy’s Medal of Honor citation spells it out, cold and unflinching:

“Despite being wounded, single-handedly held off an entire company of German soldiers for an hour.”[³]

He went on to earn every high decoration the U.S. Army awarded at the time—Silver Star, Bronze Star, Distinguished Service Cross, Purple Heart with multiple oak leaf clusters. His valor was the standard others measured by, yet his humility never wavered.

Murphy himself once said, “Courage is fear holding on a minute longer.”
